Hi Ellena~ I have worked now in Corrections for 15 years. I worked both for the state and now on the county level. I thought my degree in Criminal Justice would do something for me but I never quite used it the way I planned. I always wanted to go into probation as well. Here in Utah it is tough for for us women to move around though. I was told though going through via the juvenile probation department is one of the best ways to move up in probation. For awhile I worked as a gang laison to the county but after working specifically with gangs for 11 years before I just tired of that area. I have a little brother who is still envolved with gangs, he is in prison. I do understand it can be hard. But there is such a need for more female officers to be involved say on the major crimes task forces and such. That is where my department wanted me to go, but I am a single mother and would be away from my daughter too much. I also looked into forensics but it is such a tigh nit group here and so few positions available. Have you ever looked in to the federal jobs? There is a lot of fun things to do with them as well. But you have to be willing to relocate a lot of the time. I wish the best in whatever you do and thank you for your service in corrections!
